In this session of the 2024–2025 ASCA Cities seminar on ‘Playable Cities’, Ekim Tan will give a guest lecture on “Play the City: Representing Non-Human Agents” followed by an open discussion. Ekim Tan is an architect from Istanbul, now based in Amsterdam, with a deep interest in urban design and interactive city planning. Her innovative City Gaming method developed during her PhD research at TU Delft, uses gaming to foster collaboration in urban development. In 2008, Ekim founded ‘Play the City’ to enable governments and stakeholders to effectively co-create urban solutions. Her method has since influences city project globally, from Amsterdam to Dublin, Shenzhen, and Cape Town. Dr. Tan’s presentation will delve into how games can encourage active citizen participation by involving people in decision-making about their surroundings. Through a case study, participants will examine methods for fostering co-creation and horizontal decision-making.
